California Prop 65 FAQ’s
Our Approach to Product Safety
At OLLO Audio, we prioritise product safety and transparency. That’s why all our products include a California Proposition 65 warning. This regulation highlights over 900 chemicals that may be present in consumer goods. Proposition 65 is among the strictest safety standards worldwide, ensuring customers are informed about potential chemical exposure.
What is Proposition 65?
Proposition 65, also called "The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986," is a California law designed to notify consumers about potential exposure to substances that the state has identified as potentially causing cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm. These substances can be found in the environment, workplaces, or everyday consumer products. The law ensures people have the necessary information to make informed choices.
Why do products require Prop. 65 warnings?
As of 2018, updated regulations require companies to provide clear warnings if their products contain any of the listed substances above a certain threshold. Manufacturers must either confirm their products contain none of the listed chemicals or provide the appropriate warning label. As a result, many products now include this warning, even if they previously did not.
What types of chemicals are included in Prop. 65?
The Prop. 65 list covers a vast range of chemicals, both synthetic and naturally occurring. These substances can be found in pesticides, food, drugs, household items, dyes, construction materials, and industrial by-products such as motor vehicle emissions. For the full list, visit www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
Are there any Prop. 65 chemicals in OLLO Audio products?
Our products are made using high-quality materials. However, because the Prop. 65 list is extensive and many substances can be encountered during the manufacturing process, our products may contain trace amounts of some listed chemicals.
Do OLLO Audio products meet safety regulations?
Yes, all our products comply with federal safety standards. Proposition 65 is a state-specific law that goes beyond federal regulations. Our inclusion of the warning ensures compliance with California law but does not indicate a violation of safety standards.
Where can I learn more about Prop. 65?
For more information, visit the official Proposition 65 website: www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
Why does your website or product tag include a warning?
California law requires companies selling in the state to display this warning if any listed chemicals are present. The list is comprehensive, covering a broad range of substances. Even trace amounts require a warning under the law.
Is your product safe?
Yes, our products are safe when used as intended. The presence of a warning does not mean the product violates safety laws but serves as a precautionary measure under California regulations. We rigorously test our products to ensure they meet health and safety standards.
If your products are safe, why include a warning?
Testing every individual product for all 900+ substances is costly and complex. The safest and most practical approach to compliance is including the warning on all packaging, ensuring transparency and avoiding legal complications.
Do OLLO Audio products contain hazardous chemicals?
The Prop. 65 warning applies even if a product contains only trace amounts of a listed substance. These levels are typically far below what is considered harmful. Our materials are similar to those used in everyday items like furniture, kitchenware, and luggage.
Do you provide a list of chemicals in your products?
We list primary materials on our website, but a complete breakdown of all substances encountered during manufacturing is not always available. However, we ensure our products adhere to federal and state safety regulations.
What is the level of risk in using your products?
Prop. 65 does not quantify risk levels but provides information on exposure. For detailed assessments, visit www.P65Warnings.ca.gov or contact the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA). Based on our testing, the risk is minimal when our products are used as intended.
How does California determine safe exposure levels?
For chemicals linked to cancer, California’s "no significant risk level" (NSRL) is based on exposure that would cause no more than one additional cancer case per 100,000 people over 70 years. For substances affecting reproduction, exposure limits are set 1,000 times lower than levels that have shown no observable effect.
How can I reduce exposure risk?
Use products as intended. Avoid activities that could degrade materials, such as excessive heat exposure or physical damage.
Why am I seeing this warning if I don’t live in California?
Because we ship products worldwide and cannot control where they are sold, we include the warning universally to comply with California law.
Why do some similar products not have this warning?
Not all companies comply with Prop. 65, as enforcement is specific to California. Some brands choose to limit their sales within the state to avoid compliance. Others may have products made before the 2018 regulation updates, which had different labeling requirements. At OLLO Audio, we prioritise compliance and transparency for our customers.
I hope this clarifies our approach to Proposition 65 compliance. If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out.
